A Newborn Essentials Checklist for First-Time Parents

An honest, no-fluff checklist of what you actually need for the first six weeks at home with your newborn — and what you can confidently skip.

Walk into any baby store for the first time and you will be hit with a wall of stuff you supposedly need. Wipe warmers. Bottle sterilisers. Six different kinds of swaddle. Specialty laundry detergents. It is enormous, expensive, and — let us be honest — most of it gathers dust in a closet within a month.

This is the list we wish someone had handed us before our first baby arrived: the things you will genuinely use every single day, the things that quietly make life easier, and the things you can skip without a second thought.

The Daily Care Basics

These are the items you will reach for dozens of times a day. Get them right and everything else gets easier.

  • Diapers and wipes. Plan for 8–12 changes a day in the early weeks. Buy a small pack of newborn-size first — many babies grow out of them within two to three weeks.
  • A soft, washable changing pad. Skip the dedicated changing table if you are tight on space. A pad on top of a dresser or even the floor works just as well.
  • Burp cloths — more than you think. Aim for at least eight to ten. They double as wipes, mini blankets, and emergency bibs.
  • Swaddle blankets. Snaps are cute. Snaps at 3 a.m. with a screaming baby are not. Stick with a muslin swaddle for soft, breathable fabric. Practice swaddling before the baby arrives so when it's 3 a.m. and your newborn won't sleep, you know what to do.

Sleep and Soothing

A safe sleep space is the single most important purchase you will make for your newborn. Everything else is optional.

Choose a bassinet or crib with a firm, flat mattress and a fitted sheet — and skip the bumpers, loose blankets, and stuffed animals. The American Academy of Pediatrics is very clear on this, and it matters more than any other purchase you will make.

If you want to go deeper on the science of newborn sleep, our companion piece on baby sleep walks through sleep cycles, wake windows, and how to build a routine that actually works.

One small tip: A white noise machine is one of the most under-rated newborn purchases. It mimics the constant whoosh your baby heard in the womb for nine months, and it makes a genuine difference for sleep.

Worth knowing

Swaddling helps newborns feel secure and reduces the startle reflex that wakes them every 45 minutes. A breathable muslin swaddle gives you a snug wrap without the overheating risk of fleece. Look for OEKO-TEX certified cotton — it has been tested to be free from harmful chemicals, which matters for anything sitting against newborn skin all night.

Feeding Comfort, Whatever Path You Take

Whether you are breastfeeding, formula feeding, or doing a combination of both, a few basics go a very long way.

If you are nursing, a comfortable feeding pillow saves your shoulders and back during long stretches. Nipple cream is worth keeping on every bedside table. And a few soft, supportive nursing bras will quickly become the most-worn items in your closet.

If you are bottle feeding, start with one or two bottles before buying a whole set — babies have strong preferences, and you do not want to be stuck with eight bottles your baby refuses. A drying rack and a few cleaning brushes round things out.

Bath and Skincare

Newborns only need a real bath two or three times a week. Their skin is fragile and easily dried out by too much washing. In between, a warm washcloth wipe-down is plenty.

  • A small infant tub or a bath sponge insert
  • A hooded towel or two — surprisingly cosy for a tiny baby
  • Fragrance-free baby wash and a gentle moisturiser
  • A soft brush for cradle cap if it appears (and it usually does)

Skip: Baby powder, scented lotions, and any product with parabens or artificial fragrance. Less is more for newborn skin.

Out and About

An infant car seat is required for the ride home from the hospital, so it is the one purchase you really do need to make in advance. Beyond that:

  • A stroller that fits your lifestyle — there is no single best one
  • A roomy diaper bag with a wipeable interior
  • A baby carrier for hands-free walks (and contact naps, which save lives)
Worth knowing

Muslin blankets travel beautifully. They fold tiny, double as a stroller cover, nursing cover, sun shade, or impromptu changing mat, and breathe well in any weather. The single item we would put in every diaper bag.

Setting Up the Nursery

You do not need a Pinterest-perfect nursery. You need a calm, functional space where you can rest, feed, and bond. A safe sleep surface, a comfortable feeding chair, a changing station, and good storage will get you 95% of the way there. Our full guide to designing a calm and functional nursery walks through the rest.

Worth knowing

The fitted crib sheet is one of those quiet purchases that matters more than people realise. A sheet that bunches or shifts overnight is a real safety concern — fitted muslin crib sheets stay taut and the breathable weave helps regulate temperature through long stretches.

What You Can Honestly Skip

To save you the closet space:

  • Wipe warmer. Babies adapt within a week.
  • Bottle sterilizer. Hot soapy water and a bottle brush is fine for healthy full-term babies.
  • Newborn shoes. Cute. Useless. They fall off.
  • Crib bedding sets. Bumpers and pillows are not safe in the sleep space anyway.
  • Diaper pails with proprietary refills. A regular trash can with a lid does the same job for free.

Caring For Yourself, Too

Newborn essentials lists tend to forget the parents. They should not. Recovery is real, sleep deprivation is real, and the early weeks ask a lot of you. A water bottle with a straw, comfortable loungewear, easy one-handed snacks, and phone chargers in every feeding spot are not luxuries — they are essentials. Our guide to the fourth trimester goes deeper on what taking care of yourself can look like in this season.

One Last Thing

You do not need to buy everything before the baby arrives. Honestly. The first few weeks are a long blur of figuring out who your baby is and what they actually need — and that is hard to predict in advance. Get the essentials, leave room in your budget, and add things as you discover gaps.

The most important thing in your nursery is not on any checklist. It is you, doing your best. Welcome to parenthood.
