Baby Won't Sleep? Here's What Actually Works

A no-fluff guide for new parents — covering sleep cycles, bedtime routines, safe environments, swaddling, and surviving the 4-month regression.

Let's be honest — nobody fully prepares you for the sleep deprivation of new parenthood. You read the books, you set up the nursery, you download the app… and then your baby arrives and does absolutely whatever they want at 3 a.m. anyway.

The good news? Baby sleep isn't magic. It's a mix of biology, environment, and a few smart habits — and once you understand what's actually going on, it gets a whole lot easier.

Why Does My Baby Sleep So Weirdly?

Before we get into tips, it helps to understand what you're working with. Baby sleep cycles are much shorter than adult ones — about 45 minutes each — and babies naturally stir between cycles. This is totally normal.

The mistake most new parents make? Rushing in at the first sound and accidentally waking a baby who was about to resettle on their own. Give it 30 to 60 seconds before you respond. You'll be amazed how often they drift back off without any help at all.

Watch for the Sleepy Window (It's Shorter Than You Think)

Timing is everything. Put your baby down too early and they won't settle. Wait too long and you've got an overtired, inconsolable tiny person on your hands — and overtired babies are notoriously hard to get to sleep. Cruel irony, we know.

Watch for these early tired cues and start your wind-down as soon as you spot them:

  • Yawning or rubbing their eyes
  • Zoning out or losing interest in what's happening around them
  • Fussiness that seems to come out of nowhere
  • Getting quieter and less wiggly

Miss this window and you're swimming upstream. Catch it and bedtime becomes a whole different experience.

Build a Bedtime Routine (Yes, Even from 6 Weeks)

Babies are creatures of habit — the earlier you start a routine, the faster their little bodies learn what's coming. It doesn't need to be long or complicated. Fifteen to twenty minutes is plenty.

A simple sequence like warm bath → gentle feed → soft lullaby → into the crib works beautifully. The magic isn't in what you do, it's in doing it the same way every single night. Their nervous system starts to recognize the pattern and begins winding down before they even hit the mattress.

Worth knowing

For the swaddle step, fabric breathability matters more than most people realize. A muslin swaddle blanket gives you enough fabric for a snug wrap without the risk of overheating. Look for OEKO-TEX certified cotton, which has been tested to be free from harmful chemicals — worth checking for anything going directly against newborn skin.

Set Up the Perfect Sleep Space

Think of your baby's sleep environment as a signal to their brain: time to switch off. A few small tweaks make a big difference.

Darkness: Invest in blackout curtains. Babies are far more sensitive to light than adults, and even a small amount can disrupt melatonin production and cut naps short.

White noise: A steady hum — fan, white noise machine, or an app — drowns out household sounds and mimics the constant whooshing your baby heard in the womb for nine months. Many parents say this single change transformed their baby's sleep.

Temperature: Aim for 68–72°F (20–22°C). A slightly cool room is consistently associated with deeper, safer sleep.

Safe sleep, always: Babies sleep on their back, on a firm flat surface, with no loose blankets, pillows, or bumpers nearby. Every single time.

Worth knowing

The crib sheet itself matters too. A sheet that bunches or shifts overnight is a safety concern — fitted muslin crib sheets stay taut against the mattress and the breathable weave helps regulate temperature through the night.

Teach Them to Fall Asleep on Their Own

Here's the thing about rocking or feeding your baby all the way to sleep: when they stir between sleep cycles at 2 a.m. (which they will), they'll need the exact same conditions to fall back asleep. That's why you're being woken up every 45 minutes.

The fix is putting them down drowsy but not fully asleep. It sounds simple, but it takes practice. Start with one nap a day rather than overhauling everything at once — naptimes tend to be more forgiving than bedtime. Over a week or two, you'll see them learn how to do the last little bit of falling asleep on their own.

Don't Stress the Schedule (At First)

Newborns need 16 to 18 hours of sleep spread across the whole day and night — there's no keeping them on a tidy schedule yet. What you can track is their wake window: how long they can comfortably stay awake before needing to sleep again. For newborns, this is usually just 45 to 90 minutes.

By around three to four months, naps start to consolidate and things get more predictable. Until then, flexibility is your superpower.

The Four-Month Sleep Regression Is Real

Just when you think you've cracked it — the four-month sleep regression hits. Sleep that was improving suddenly falls apart. Night wakings return. Everyone is exhausted.

This is completely normal. It's developmental, not a step backward — your baby's sleep architecture is maturing to become more like an adult's. The best thing you can do is hold steady with your routine and environment. It passes, usually within two to three weeks.

One Last Thing: Take Care of Yourself Too

You cannot pour from an empty cup, and it's never more true than in those first months of parenthood. Sleep deprivation affects your mood, your patience, and your ability to stay consistent — which is exactly what good sleep habits require.

Nap when you can. Accept help when it's offered. Tag in your partner for night feeds where possible. You're doing an incredible job, even on the hard nights.

Every baby gets there eventually. This season is temporary, even when it doesn't feel like it.
